Gatsby's Wish

Nick tells readers that Gatsby "wanted nothing less of Daisy than that she should go to Tom and say 'I never loved you.' After she had obliterated (erased) three years with that sentence they could decide upon the more practical measures to be taken. One of them was that, after she was free, they were to go back to Louisville and be married from her house -- just as if it were five years ago." (Chapter 6, p. 116)

Assume that Nick is correct. Consider the quote carefully. Show how our understanding of Gatsby grows in this chapter by responding to each of the following points in 2 well-developed and carefully expressed paragraphs. Include details that specifically relate to the 2 points listed below:

1) Use an adjective to describe Gatsby based on this quote and previous
evidence in the novel. Defend your description by including details from the
novel.
2) Explain: Gatsby probably will (won't) succeed in fulfilling his dream. (best
responses will include specific details about other characters & previous events
in the novel).

  3. Based on my reading I believe that Gatsby is a self-centered gentleman. He can be very polite at times but there are those times that he just wants things to go his way. For everything to happen how he wants them too. I believe that this is true because Jordan asked Nick to invite Daisy over to his house so that Gatsby could meet her again. When this happened, Gatsby and Daisy both lost track of reality. They were just living in the past. Daisy was married to Tom. If Gatsby wanted Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him, and he didnt know if she did, then I think that would make him very self-centered.

I do not think that he will succeed. The reason i think this is because Daisy has probably loved Tom at some point. All that Gatsby knows is what she was like in that moment. He does not know how she was in her own home with Tom. She could have been infactuated by past experiences. This could be why Gatsby thinks that she is a perfect woman as she was five years ago.

  4. Based on reading "The Great Gatsby", I believe Gatsby to be a over expectant man. He has convinced himself that Daisy is just going to leave Tom and come to him. Also, he believes that she never loved Tom, but he is wrong because in the story Daisy admits that when she married Tom she did love him. Gatsby's overexpectancy of everything to work out perfectly will ultimately be his downfall.
Gatsby will not achieve his dream because after 5 years, Daisy is not going to just leave Tom to marry a person she doesn't know anymore. He had a chance 5 years ago, but all his hopes have now vanished. All he's doing is bringing himself closer to failure.

  5. I believe that Gatsby is a very selfish person from the book and the quote. He has been trying to impress people, mostly Daisy. Gatsby has tried all these years by throwing huge elaborate parties to get his name around the town. He has tried really hard to get to Daisy. He wants Daisy and he won't stop till he gets her and he doesn't care who gets hurt in the process as long as he gets her.

I believe that he won't succeed in fulfilling his dream for several reasons. I believe that he doesn't think that Daisy will be affected by dropping everything and going to Louisville. I think that Daisy is going to have a very hard time leaving Tom. Since she wouldn’t leave him when she knew that he was cheating on her. Gatsby is also very naïve that he thinks she actually wants this. He doesn’t know for sure yet, considering that they just met up again after 5 years.

  6. Based on me criteria I have came to a conclusion that Jay Gatsby is a very lonley, optimistic, and love struck man. We learn that Gatsby can be a party animal and a "back stabber".
I also see Gatsby as an "attention seeker" Gatsby is digging this big hole for himself. I think that Gatsby will not get far in life because of his bad habits.

  9. In my opinion I picture Gatsby as a hopeless romantic. He wants Daisy to go and tell Tom, whom she's been married to 3 years, that she wants to end it, all because of a man she loved 5 years or so ago. It's a bit of a reach. If it truely happens it's sheer luck. Just out of the real world kind of situations like that that I've seen, 9 times out of 10 it surely does NOT happen.
Unfortunately I don't think it will happen. Tom Buchanan definitely is a controlling and aggressive husband. You can see right now what the reactions of him are just to them spending time together. He's quite controlling which therefore can make him unpredictable when it comes to sketchy situations like this one. But Daisy does seem a little swept off her feet. But once again, according to real life experiences, it is not realistic that it'll happen. Controlling boyfriends or husbands can be very persuasives.

  11. I think that Alex Thompson's post was very good. I didn't think about it like that and I do believe that to be true. His dreams are too elaborate and he is expecting everything to just be handed to him.

  12. After reading Mrs. Hurts lovely blog. I now can see that Gatsby is a man who dreams big and waits long for what he wants. I also believe that Gatsby is a very self-seeking man. I can assume this by reading the book which tells us that Gatsby bought his house on Westegg across from Daisy's house just waiting for his chance with her. Gatsby dreams that Daisy will one day go to Tom and tell him that she had never loved him. He dreams to break up a marriage for his own happiness, that's why I believe he is self-seeking. Also I think he's self-seeking because he uses his friends Tom and Jordan to get to Daisy and invite her to the house.

I think Gatsby won't succeed in fulfilling his dreams because he is too self centered and self-seeking that in the end he won't deserve to be with Daisy. I also think he won't end up with Daisy because Daisy is too in love with Tom.

  13. Based on my reading, I believe Gatsby is clever. There are still questions about him and he seems to be pretty mysterious. He seems to have a clever thinking and thinks different than others. Gatsby picks his words and tries to please people.
I am actually undecided if Gatsby will succeed in his dream. In a way I think Gatsby will succeed because he seems to get what he wants. Daisy doesn’t even get along with Tom. He has a lot of money and sometimes that can overpower what people want. Gatsby’s power to make his dreams real is what makes him different.
On the other half I think his dream will fail. In chapter 6, it becomes clear that his most powerfully realized dream is his own identity. Gatsby’s love for Daisy is itself a dream. He thinks of her as the sweet girl who loved him in Louisville, but the reality is, is that she’s married and I don't think she would leave her own class and background to be with him.

  15. Based on this quote from the book "The Great Gatsby," I would say that Gatsby, the main character can be described as a very mysterious person. I chose this adjective because Gatsby is a very mysterious figure for Nick, since Nick knows neither his motives, nor the source of Gatsby's wealth. Gatsby has convinced Daisy to fall in love with him and leave Tom. From this quote, the word mysterious is shown because he is not sure of what he wants. Nobody knows what Gatsby truly wants, and from this we realize that he can’t tell the truth about whether or not Tom ever loved Daisy.
I agree with Emma on this because I do not think that Gatsby will succeed. At some point in the relationship Daisy was infatuated with Tom, and now she thinks she has realized what is better for her, and that is that she thinks she’s falling in love with Gatsby. Daisy has put up with a lot of Tom over the five years that they were together. After being together that long and getting through everything, such as fights, you would imagine them to stay together. Another reason he won’t succeed is because he hasn’t realized what life in the Buchanan household is like.

  16. The easiest way to describe Gatsby would be as a lost romantic, as Emma said. He believes that Daisy will leave Tom just because he's happened to come up and step in. However, he's been gone for about five years and it's been a tad too long for him to finally step in. He would also be described as a pleaser. He likes to do things that will be suitable to other people. It seems as if everything that he's accomplished in life is to win Daisy over. Daisy only likes rich men. Gatsby probably shows Daisy his home and all his fancy objects to show that he is a rich, well off man. He's only accumulated these objects to possibly win Daisy back over. He's been only seeking her for five years.

I don't think that Gatsby will achieve his dream. It's been five years, a lot longer than either of them had hoped. Daisy's married and has a daughter; she's not just going to leave them to go after this one love. Tom also loves Daisy very much, even though he does have another woman. This is shown through his argument with Myrtle in the second chapter. Daisy won't leave Tom. What if Daisy isn't everything that Gatsby has hoped and dreamed over those many years? He's just end up awfully sad and like he'd made a great mistake. He's wasted so much time on this hopeless dream of having Daisy. I believe he will fight to the death for her, although he truly will never complete his dream.

  19. Based on the reading it is my belief that Gatsby is a nervous man. He was incredibly nervous before the gathering that Nick was asked to have. Gatsby had someone go over to Nick’s house and cut the grass because he was trying to impress Daisy. Also Gatsby knocked over the clock in Nick’s house. Then when they moved back over to Gatsby’s house he had some guy play the piano for them. He also did many other things that make it so you can tell that he is nervous about being in Daisy’s presence.
I do not think that Gatsby’s dream of being with Daisy will come true. I believe that it won’t because I think the plot is building up to an ending that is not a pleasant ending. I think that daisy won’t to leave Tom because he has a lot of money. Another thought that I have is that Gatsby will get murdered due to the fact that he is so mysterious. Those are the reasons that I believe Gatsby’s dream will not come true.

  20. I like Alex Thomsons blog because he used some big words in it. Also I didnt think of the hopeless romantic part. I just thoughtbhe was selfish. But he's the kind of person who thinks everything will be spoon fed to him. He thinks he can get anything he wants.

  21. I think Gatsby is unrealistic. He knows what he wants and doesn’t realize how hard it would be to get it. He bought a house in west egg just so he could be across from Daisy and he waited for 5 years just for the chance to run into her, or for her to come to one of her parties. It was purely out of luck that his neighbor turns out to be related to Daisy so this makes him unrealistic. I agree with that Alex said because Gatsby just assumes that Daisy will leave Tom and that she never loved him. This also makes him seem kind of arrogant and self-centered. He comes off as polite because he knows what to say to people. People in the book always say he sounds like he is “selecting his word” so I think that some of them can see through him.
I don’t think Gatsby will succeed with his goal. Daisy isn’t going to just erase three years of her life and tell Tom that he never loved him. She also has a child with him. Gatsby needs to take into consideration that Daisy might not want to be with Gatsby because she doesn’t know him anymore, and because she has a life and child with Tom. And even though Daisy knows that Tom doesn’t treat her right, I don’t think she doesn’t want to leave him.

  22. I think that Gatsby is a liar just based on my reading. I think that he is a liar because he has too many secrets and a lot of phone calls at night. He gets the phone calls and he goes into his study and sometimes he is gone for a long time. All of them are at night and most people don’t get business calls at night.
I think that he won’t fulfill his dreams. I think these because If Daisy hasn’t left Tom yet then she’s not going to leave him know. She has a child with him, and I think too much time has passed. Even though she never love Tom, and that was shown when she crying at the hotel.

  23. Based on my reading , I believe that Gatsby is very selfish.Gatsby convinces himself that Daisy will just drop the life that she is living now. He wants Daisy to leave Tom and marry him. He doesn't relize that Daisy will never leave Tom. I understand that he wants to be happy, but he has to realize Daisy is clueless to the world that she lives in. She admits that she loves Tom, even though he is abusive.
I agree with the posts above. I believe Gatsby will not succeed because of how much he expects out of people. If he really wanted to be with her so bad, he could have done it 5 years ago. What Gatsby is expecting is very unrealistic. In real life if you expected a married person to leave their spouse for yourself, it would never happen. No matter how abused that person's life is.

  24. 1) What Gatsby is doing is going to be a minor version of the gang war of the Bloods and the Cripps. Gatsby is in with the police and the mafia which would be his gang. Tom will get furious at Gatsby and hire some guys because he has the money and will try to kill Gatsby. At the end the gangs will be East Egg versus West Egg. So Gatsby is oblivious what he is actually doing and become a chain reaction of destruction.

  25. To Ean's response, I can see where you're coming from with the selfishness aspect of his personality, but you also have to step into his shoes. It is blatantly there that Daisy is being controlled and treated like dirt with Tom. Gatsby is more observant than we give him credit. If Nick can tell that she is losing the love because of Tom's actions and the fact that he cheats on her and is not treating her how he deserves. Whereas meanwhile Gatsby wants to treat Daisy beautifully and put her on a pedestal. If a man loves a woman who is being treated unfairly in her current realationship, he will most likely do everything in his power to win her over so that he can treat her fairer and the way that he believes she deserves.

  26. From my reading and the quote I would describe Gatsby as needy. I think that he is needy because he wants everyone to view him in a certain way. He wants people that know that he is rich. He wants people to see him a friendly person. He wants to be friends with everyone. He wants Daisy to be his. With Gatsby wanting all the thing s that he wants, I find him very needy.

I think that Gatsby’s wish to be with Daisy might come true. I think this because Tom wants to be with his mistress, and I think the daisy wants to be with Gatsby. It seems to me that Daisy wants to be with a rich man and I don’t think she had any idea that Gatsby was rich until now. I think she knows that she would be happier with Gatsby rather than Tom. I think that everything would work out if Daisy and Tom spilt and Daisy went with Gatsby and Tom with his mistress. But what I read from this book already it sounds like the wish and what I am saying sounds too good to be true.

  27. I agree with Annie and Emma. Gatsby is a lost romantic. After reading what I said before, I was unsure If he would pursue his dreams but I don't think he will now. It has been five years and that has been way too long. I'm not sure if Daisy still has feelings for him because she is married. However, her and Tom don't get along.

  28. I agree with Alex Gatsby is very selfish. She makes a good point of saying that he just wants Daisy to drop her life just to go with him by that statement it makes me think like she only cares about what he wants and what he gets.

  30. Biased on my newly obtained knowledge of Jay Gatsby I would describe him as being an idealist. An idealist is a person who cherishes or pursues high principals, purposes, or goals. They represent things as they could be or should be rather than as they are. They idolize others, and they are impractical.

I think that Jay Gatsby is an idealist because when he was young, he decided that he was going to grow up and live the same kind of lavish lifestyle as Dan Cody did. By doing this he was idolizing Dan Cody, as well as pursuing his principles and goals. When thinking of Daisy, Gatsby thinks of her as he wishes she were rather than the way she really is.

In my opinion Jay Gatsby will not succeed in his goals because he is an impractical person. When he said that he “wanted nothing less of Daisy than for her to go to Tom and say ‘I never loved you’” he was really asking her to end a long standing marriage with the father of her newly born child to start a relationship with him, which is a lot to ask for from a woman whom he hadn’t been with for several years.

  32. In response to Matt M.'s post, i respectively disagree with what he thinks about Gatsby. He said that Gatsby will not make it very far in life, but if you ask me he already has. He has a huge house with all the luxuries that a man could possibly need. He is also extremely wealthy. So in conclusion, he has already made it further than most people do in life.

  33. I agree with Danielle. He is very unrealistic. There's so many other this he could go after in his life, but he goes after the one thing he'll never be able to obtain. He is only human after all, and that seems to be what human's try to do in their lives.

  35. I believe that Gatsby is being thickheaded and conceited. He just suspects that Daisy would tell Tom she never loved him. He expects so much from her and she just can't do it.

I do not believe that Gatsby will succed in this plan because Daisy must have loved Tom, why else would they have gotten married? Even if Daisy no longer loved Tom it wouldn't matter because she was with Tom and they had a child together. You can't just expect Daisy and Tom to stop loving each other. The two of them have to be together for Pammy's sake.

  36. I agree with Ean's post. Not only is it well writen, i believe in exactly what he is saying. We both agree that Daisy and Tom loved each other at some point and that the two of them will fall in love again eventually.
